Sebastian Fagerlund chosen as resident composer for Concertgebouw

Sebastian Fagerlund has been chosen the resident composer for the Amsterdam based concert hall Concertgebouw. Fagerlund will start composing for Concertgebouw at season 2016–2017, after Chinese-American composer Haung Ruo’s post ends.

”Now I have a feeling that the world is open to me. For a composer, there are not many opportunities like this, and places where you can go and get influenced”, said Fagerlund in an interview with Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadbladet.

During his post in Amsterdam, Fagerlund will play a visible role in the city's musical life. Of the Dutch music institutions, Fagerlund will cooperate with the Dutch radio orchestra already in May when he will perform his Teosto prize winning orchestral work Ignite (2010). During his stay in Amsterdam Fagerlund promises to also write new work to be premiered in 2018.

Right now, Fagerlund is finishing Syyssonaatti, his comissioned work for Finnish National Opera, based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1978 film Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata), which is starring mezzosoprano Anne Sofie von Otter.
