Finnish music exports in 2025

Finnish music exports continued to grow in 2025, reaching a total value of 156.2 million euros. Compared to the previous year, this represents growth of 4.3 percent. The figures are based on Music Finland's annual study on the value of Finnish music exports.

Growth in the core areas of Finnish music exports in 2025 was driven especially by copyright revenues from abroad and other export income, such as composition and production fees, sheet music sales, and merchandise. Copyright income from abroad increased by 12 percent to 9.5 million euros, while other export revenues grew by 16 percent to 1.9 million euros.

Following several years of strong growth, live music export income declined slightly in 2025, falling by 5 percent to 9.6 million euros. Nevertheless, live music remained the largest of the core export categories. Revenue from recorded music exports remained broadly unchanged at 8.0 million euros.

Overall, exports from these core areas generated 29.0 million euros, representing growth of 2.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Beyond the core areas, the value of music exports also includes categories such as music applications, music technology, and other music-related goods and services. With the continued expansion of digital music services and technology companies, exports from these sectors remained the largest part of Finnish music exports, totaling 127.1 million euros, approximately 5 percent more than in 2024.

Together, these sectors form the overall picture of Finnish music's international economic impact, reaching 156.2 million euros in 2025.

Finnish music export 1999–2025

Live music export income consists, for example, of performance fees received by Finnish artists from abroad and tickets purchased by foreign customers for concerts and music events organized in Finland. In 2025, live music remained the largest category within core music exports, generating approximately 9.6 million euros in revenue for Finland, a decrease of 5 percent compared to the previous year.

Copyright-related revenues, collected through Finnish copyright organizations or paid directly to music companies and rights holders, increased by 12 percent in 2025. In total, approximately 9.5 million euros in copyright income was transferred to Finland from abroad. Copyright revenues may fluctuate considerably from year to year due to delays in royalty distributions, the accumulation of payments in individual years, and changes in reporting practices.

The export value of recordings remained relatively stable, amounting to 8.0 million euros in 2025. Revenue streams include physical record sales, digital sales, and streaming revenues that rights holders receive from abroad. Streaming continues to be an important driver of recorded music exports, while vinyl records also maintain a significant position in physical sales.

Other revenue sources include items such as composition and production fees, sheet music sales and rentals, studio services, advertising contracts, and merchandise. This income is closely tied to the other core areas of music exports mentioned above but cannot be directly attributed to any single one of them. Other export income increased by 16 percent to 1.9 million euros in 2025.

In recent years, most of the total value of music exports has come from other goods and services, which include, for example, digital music services aimed at consumers and companies, as well as musical instruments, sound reproduction technology, and equipment. There are fast-growing Finnish companies in this sector that have established a strong position in the international market, and the sector continues to expand.

In 2025, the value of exports from other goods and services in the music industry was approximately 127.1 million euros, an increase of around 5 percent over the previous year.

Including all sectors, the total value of Finnish music exports in 2025 was 156.2 million euros, representing 4.3 percent growth compared to the previous year.

Europe continues to be an important destination for Finnish music exports. The key European markets include the Nordic countries, German-speaking Europe, and the United Kingdom, as well as the Benelux countries. Outside Europe, North America is a major export market for Finnish music.

For music technology and digital services in particular, North America is the largest export market, accounting for up to half of the sector's total exports.

How the survey was made

In this study, the value of music exports is defined as music-related revenue received from abroad by companies and individuals operating in Finland. The value is based on data from industry organizations and companies, publicly available financial records, a survey of Finnish music companies, and expert interviews and evaluations.

The data was collected by research manager Merja Hottinen from Music Finland and researcher Tuomas Ilmavirta, who was also responsible for calculating the values of different sectors, conducting expert evaluations, and writing the report.
