BBC3 brings out the North

On March 9, the Barbican Centre in London will resound with Nordic music. BBC3's theme day "Total Immersion: New from the North" will present a total of six concerts with new Nordic music, including eight Finnish works.

In the afternoon concert, the Norwegian Vertavo Quartet will play Jouni Kaipainen's String Quartet No 6 and Kaija Saariaho's Terra Memoria. At six, BBC Singers will perform vocal music by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Olli Kortekangas and Jussi Chydenius.

The orchestral concert with BBC Symphony Orchestra, Finnish conductor John Storgårds and Finnish clarinettist Christoffer Sundqvist, will include two UK premieres of recent Finnish works: Magnus Lindberg's latest orchestral work Era, and Sebastian Fagerlund's much liked Clarinet Concerto.
