Finland prepares to Eurovision 2025 with unforeseen presence
This year, Finland’s presence at Eurovision Song Contest is more notable than ever before! Two Finnish acts will take the stage in Basel next week: one representing Finland and one who proudly flies the Swedish flag. And that’s not even the whole story!
A part of Finland's unprecedented visibility in the song competition come from collaboration with two of our neighbouring countries. First of all, we have Erika Vikman (pictured above), who will represent her home country Finland with “Ich Komme”. Secondly, comedic trio KAJ, will represent Sweden this year. And thirdly, Finns also have a hand in Estonia’s ESC song, which was co-written and produced by a Finnish producer.
Erika Vikman’s “Ich Komme” won the Finnish UMK competition by a landslide: the song garnered 75 percent of all the votes, and was warmly welcomed by the ESC fan community right after its release. The odds for “Ich Komme” to come at the top (sorry for the pun) in the Basel finals are not the best anymore – the song has now a 3 % chance of winning the contest and it is estimated to land at number six in the finals, according to Eurovisionworld’s odds. But we have faith in Erika – and win or no win, this will be a great international showcase for Vikman, who is the first woman to represent Finland in the contest since Saara Aalto took her “Monsters” to Lisboa in 2018. According to Vikman, “Ich Komme” is about "the joyous message of pleasure, ecstasy and a state of trance", sexual pleasure and reaching the climax – and most surely will not leave the European audiences cold! Hailing from the small municipality of Vörå in Finland’s west coast, the comedy trio KAJ took the whole Nordic by surprise when they won the Swedish ESC qualifying competition Melodifestivalen. Their catchy sauna-themed “Bara Bada Bastu” left behind Swedish superstar, Eurovision titan Måns Zelmerlöw with seven points, and is now an early favorite for winning the competition, with a 36 percent chance of winning. KAJ’s members represent the Finnish-Swedish minority which is why they perform mainly in Swedish – their own distinct dialect, Vörå, to be exact. While the Swedish music industry has been baffled by KAJ’s success, as the style of “Bara Bada Bastu” is almost a complete opposite of Sweden’s previous Eurovision entries, the Finnish media has already analyzed the phenomenon as a “new symbol of neighbourly love”. Read more about the KAJ phenomenon.
But for Finland, it was still not enough to spread its musical love to Sweden only. We had to have the Estonians too! That’s why Finnish songwriter and producer Johannes Naukkarinen, of Käärijä’s “Cha Cha Cha” fame, decided to work with Estonian rapper Tommy Cash, to create “Espresso Macchiato”. Well, originally the song was not actually intended to compete as ESC, but we’re all glad that it does. The odds for “Espresso Macchiato” winning are at 2,3 %, and it is estimated to land at number seven in the finals, but is also considered a “dark horse” in the race. Remember: these are just predictions and anything can still happen, once the artists take their songs and shows to the stage!
