Mälkki, Salonen and Saariaho nominated for classical Grammys

Conductors Susanna Mälkki (pictured) and Esa-Pekka Salonen are nominated for next year's Grammy Awards. The recording of the late Kaija Saariaho's opera "Adriana Mater" has also received two nominations.

The nominations for the US recording industry's most prestigious awards were announced on Friday, November 8. The nominees have been selected from recordings released during the past year.

Susanna Mälkki's nomination came in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra's recording Sibelius: Karelia Suite, Rakastava, & Lemminkäinen (BIS Records, 2024).

In the same category, Esa-Pekka Salonen is nominated for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's recording of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird (San Francisco Symphony, 2024). Salonen is also nominated for Adriana Mater (Deutsche Grammophon, 2024), the recording of the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's opera with the San Francisco Orchestra. In addition, the Adriana Mater recording is nominated in the category of Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

The 2025 Grammy Awards will be presented on February 2, in Los Angeles.
