Pekka Kuusisto is the next Chief Conductor of Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra
Pekka Kuusisto, the Finnish violinist and conductor, becomes the next Chief Conductor of the renowned Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra from April 2028, serving an initial three-year term. Before this, he will collaborate with TMSO as Artist in Residence from April 2026 for two years, both as conductor and violinist.
Pekka Kuusisto is particularly known for his exceptional musicality, boundary-breaking performance style, and diverse musical collaboration projects. Kuusisto combines classical music with other styles, such as folk music, electronic music, and improvisation. His interpretations are often original and emotionally powerful.
We are extremely pleased to announce Pekka Kuusisto as our next Chief Conductor from April 2028. He is an exceptional musician, brimming with creativity, and able to captivate with his authentic, lively performances, says Tetsuki Kunishio, the Director of Artistic Planning of TMSO.
I have been an admirer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra from our first rehearsal together. It is a gift to now become a member of this great musical family.
I feel a joyous responsibility for understanding the musical pulse of Tokyo, and how it resonates within Japanese cultural life, adds Pekka Kuusisto.
Today, Pekka Kuusisto continues to work as both a violinist and conductor, and his career is increasingly focused on orchestral conducting. Kuusisto has plenty of engagements: he is also Artistic Director of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor and member of the artistic management team of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
